Hy Van Luong (Send

HY V. LUONG (B.A., University of California at Berkeley; A.M. and
Ph.D., Harvard University) is currently Professor of Anthropology
and Director of the Collaborative Master's Degree Program in Asia-Pacific Studies. He is interested in the interplay of
discourse, social structure, political economy, and in East
and Mainland Southeast Asia (especially Vietnam). He has regularly conducted fieldwork in Vietnam since 1987. Luong's current
projects in Vietnam focus on discourse, gender, political economy,
gifts and social capital, and sociocultural transformation in rural
and urbanizing communities in the northern and southern parts of
Vietnam.
Among Luong’s honors are the Outstanding Teaching Award from the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto (1994) and an Honorary Professorship (highest academic honor) at the National University of Vietnam in Ho Chi Minh City (2006).
