Health Promotion Education and Training (Chair, Marcia Hills)
This Workgroup enhances communication among educators of health promotion in Canada via the creation of a national listserve, conducting a national survey of courses and resources in health promotion (both English and Francophone resources), and holding symposia in conjunction with the CPHA conferences in 1999 and 2000. In the future, consideration will be given to other mechanisms for linking students and post-docs across Consortium member Centres in Canada.
As part of the work done by the Health Promotion Education and Training working group of the consortium, a special double issue of Promotion & Education, the official journal of the International Union of Health Promotion and Education (IUHPE), has been released at the end of May 2000. Co-edited by Michel O'Neill, of Université Laval and Marcia Hills, of University of Victoria, this special issue presents the situation of academic training in these domains all over the world. Other members of the consortium have participated as well in two of the papers of the special issue, notably a group of people from Alberta coordinated by Doug Wilson as well as Jim Frankish, from UBC. The issue was co-sponsored by Health Canada and the Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux du Québec and can be obtained by sending an e-mail to Marie-Claude Lamarre, executive director of IUHPE, at iuhpemcl@worldnet.fr

Syntheses of Evidence of the Effectiveness of Health
Promotion Interventions (Chair, Irv Rootman)
Although there have been systematic reviews for some health promotion interventions
and the Cochrane collaboration is beginning to add literature syntheses to
its accumulation of evidence, there is more to be done to consolidate what
is know about the effectiveness of health promotion initiatives from all sources.
This workgroup has prepared a paper on contract with Health Canada which assesses
the methods and concepts used by 17 initiatives to synthesize the evidence
in health promotion and proposes a model process for synthesizing evidence
in health promotion. Another paper is being produced entitled "Compilation
of Evidence of Effective Active Living Interventions: A Case Study Approach." The
following papers are available on this site: An
Assessment of the Methods and Concepts Used to Synthesize the Evidence of Effectiveness
in Health Promotion: A Review of 17 Initiatives, and Healthy
Lifestyle: Strengthening the Effectiveness of Lifestyle Approaches to Improve
Health. (1/10/02)
