U of T community members recognized with Order of Canada

Several members of the University of Toronto community have been recognized with the Order of Canada, the country’s highest civilian honour, in the latest round of appointments and promotions announced June 30, 2025.

They were among 83 individuals who were appointed to – or promoted within – the Order in recognition of sustained and extraordinary contributions to Canada in medicine, the arts, education and international relations, among other areas.

The project aims to make the pricey technology, which automates and accelerates the process of scientific discovery, cheaper and more accessible.

The new approach, called ChronoFlow, predicts the ages of stars with a level of accuracy that was previously impossible to achieve with analytical models.
Geoffrey Hinton discusses promise and perils of AI at Toronto Tech Week
The Nobel laureate took part in a lively discussion with Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst at U of T's Convocation Hall and put forth two of his most compelling and controversial contentions: that large language models understand language – rather than merely regurgitate it – and that AI could pose an existential risk to humanity.

Updates from U of T

Faculty member and librarian performance evaluation and merit process for 2024-25 (PTR/5% Merit)
The university administration and the U of T Faculty Association have received the arbitration award for Across the Board (ATB) salary increases and benefits improvements. Both parties have agreed to pay the July 1, 2025 PTR/Merit and the awarded retroactive pay increases for July 1, 2023 and July 1, 2024 in the Sept. 2025 monthly pay run.
