The European Union Centre of Excellence at the Centre for European, Russian, and Eurasian Studies signals a new chapter in European Union studies at the University of Toronto through a partnership with the University of Victoria funded by the European Commission. Following on more than a decade of support from the Commission, the new partnership's joint mission is to promote the study of the European Union in Canada. The EUCE draws upon established strengths at the University of Toronto including the program in Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law, and more than a dozen departments in the Faculty of Arts and Science. The EUCE is housed in the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. More
The EUCE hosts a rich program of public outreach, educational, and research activities at both universities. In the current round of funding the main areas of focus for the two partner universities are:
- The financial crisis, EMU, the stability of currencies, and the financial system;
- Immigration and citizenship;
- EU borders, neighbourhood, and foreign policy.
A series of workshops and conferences on these themes are planned for 2010-2012. For events taking place at the University of Toronto, see the "News and Events" sidebar. For events taking place at the University of Victoria, visit web.uvic.ca/europe/euce.php.
The EUCE supports University of Toronto and University of Victoria undergraduate and graduate students through its teaching programs and through academic exchanges with post-secondary educational institutions in Europe.
The EUCE promotes knowledge and awareness of the European Union in the wider community through its public events and its annual workshops for secondary school students and teachers. Our next European Union Workshop will take place in spring 2013.
At the University of Toronto the EUCE’s Director is Professor Randall Hansen.
At the University of Victoria the EUCE’s Director is Professor Emmanuel Brunet-Jailly.
