Robert William Andrew (Robin) Elliott was born in Kingston, Ontario in 1956. He took violin lessons with Dezsö Vághy from 1971 to 1978 and studied string quartet performance with the Vághy String Quartet at the Kelso Music Centre from 1976 to 1978. From 1974 to 1978 he studied music at Queen's University, and graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree in 1978. One of his teachers at Queen's University was Istvan Anhalt, with whom he studied twentieth century music. After studying music and German for a year in Vienna, Robin Elliott returned to Canada and began graduate studies in musicology at the University of Toronto. He received the M.A. degree in 1981. He was editor of Chamber Music I: Piano Trios, Volume 11 of the Canadian Musical Heritage, which was published in Ottawa in 1989.
