Alupent for wheezy children

by Dr. Moshe Ipp

The use of Alupent syrup for wheezy children.

Alupent (Orciprenaline) is an oral b2-agonist that has limited use in the treatment of wheezy children, primarily because more effective agents, usually administered by inhalation and with less adverse reactions are now available. Oral Alupent has the potential to cause children to become quite "wired", hyperactive and agitated, as one of it's most concerning side effects. There may however be a place for the use of Alupent in young infants and children who have a questionable diagnosis of wheezing or a very mild form of asthma. It is sometimes used for those children who are wheezing mildly for the very first time. The main advantages of Alupent are it's ease of administration and low cost. When prescribing Alupent physicians must explain in detail to parents why the product is being used in preference to inhaled medications, what the potential side effects are, and that should the child's condition worsen they should call or return immediately for review and the consideration of alternate medications.
