What is breech?

Breech presentation describes babies who lie with their heads up and their legs and bottom down towards their mother’s pelvis. Most babies turn themselves into a head down position before they are born. However, a few babies (about 3-4% or one in every 25 to 30 babies born at full term) will stay in a breech position until they are born.

What are the risks of breech?

Babies born in breech presentation are at a slightly higher risk of encountering problems in the birthing process. Research suggests these babies will have a better outcome if they are born by Caesarean section. However, women are more likely to encounter complications when they have a Caesarean section and to take longer to recover from the birth.
