Dr. Morshead’s area of expertise is in stem cell biology and specifically, in the field of adult neural stem cells. Dr. Morshead did her PhD at the University of Toronto and was appointed her first faculty position there in 2003.

Currently she holds a faculty position in the Department of Surgery, and is the Chair of the Division of Anatomy at the University of Toronto. She is also a member of the Network for Centres of Excellence Stem Cell Network and Canadian Stroke Network and an associate member of the Heart and Stroke Foundation Centre for Stroke Recovery.

Her lab uses a number of in vivo and in vitro techniques to explore the fundamental biology of neural stem cells as a first step to utilizing these cells in regenerative medicine strategies. Her team is actively pursuing the role of stem cells in models of disease such as stroke, cerebral palsy and spinal cord injury. Dr. Morshead's lab is funded by CIHR, Stem Cell Network, NSERC, Canadian Stroke Network, The Centre for Stroke Recovery, Three to be Foundation, The Krembil Foundation, Brain Canada, the Ontario Brain Institute, Neurodevnet, New World Laboratories and the Heart & Stroke Foundation.
