UTORforum
Overview
The
Software
There are many
ways of accessing shared folders. For the UTORforum
project, e-mail will be used as the access method.
Two e-mail programs which support shared folder
technology are Simeon
(Windows 95 and 3.1 and Macintosh) and
Pine . Pine
is available at Public
Access Facilities including the
Information
Commons on the First
Floor of the Robarts Library.
Installation and
configuration of the software is part of the
starter package. Additional documents,
Fast Forward for
Simeon for Windows 3.1 and
Fast Forward for
PC Pine, describe the
basic features of reading, sending and deleting
e-mail.
This document
highlights the differences between accessing your
personal inbox folder and shared folders.
Upgrading Existing
Software
If you have been
using Windows ECSMail (a
previous version of Simeon) or Macintosh
Eudora, you
must upgrade to Simeon to use
shared folders. If you used ECSMail, it is
important that you read the
document Converting
from ECSmail to Simeon.
Shared
Folders--How They Differ from Your Personal
Inbox
Members of the
UTORforum pilot project will have both a private
inbox folder (in Simeon, this is located in your
UTORmail message service) and a shared folder
(located in the UTORforum message service.)
Messages can be concurrently accessed in both the
private inbox and the shared folder. However,
messages in private inboxes can only be accessed by
the owner. Everyone who is part of the course can
see the contents of the shared folder. Messages can
be sent to the the shared folder (this is described
below) but be aware that everyone in the course
will see all messages. Private communications with
the professor or classmates should be done via
UTORmail - DO NOT send private e-mail messages to
the shared folder.
