UTORmail FAQ - Problems
sending email
Q.
I am using Sympatico as my Internet Service Provider. I can receive
email but I cannot send mail. What is wrong?
A.
In late August 2001, Sympatico put a filter on its network to block
anyone sending email through any post office other than Sympatico's.
You can still read your UTORmail mail from Sympatico--this has not
changed. However, when connected to the Sympatico network, your
"SMTP" (sending post office) server must be the one Sympatico assigned
you. (Try smtp1.sympatico.ca). When using Sympatico, but connecting
to "utoronto" in the access manager, you must use the the smtpserver
assigned to you by the University.
Q.
I am using Rogers as my Internet Service Provider.
I can receive email but I cannot send mail. What is wrong?
A.
We've had a sudden rash of Rogers broadband customers who
suddenly
cannot relay mail through a UTORmail SMTP server. This has
nothing to
do with the university as Rogers have slowly been upgrading
their mail
servers to disallow mail relaying, which is using a non-local
SMTP
server such as postoffice128.utcc.utoronto.ca.
You will need to replace postoffice128.utcc.utoronto.ca with
your local
Rogers SMTP server and than enable SMTP authentication within
your mail
client. Please read the following Rogers support page carefully
for
instructions on how to make the required changes:
http://www.rogershelp.com/yahoo/mail/smtp.html#two
If the instructions above do not resolve the problem, please
contact
Rogers support for further assistance since this change was
implemented
by Rogers, and UTORmail does not offer additional SMTP ports.
Q.
Does UTORmail offer additional SMTP ports?
A.
We are working to open up additional ports for sending, but
have not implemented any yet.
