2013 RBC Conference: Global Innovations - Going Broad, Going Deep

The Faculty of Arts and Science has opened registration for the upcoming RBC Conference on Thursday, April 25, 2013. PROGRIS's Meric Gertler Appointed President of University of Toronto

The University of Toronto announced today "World-renowned urban expert to become next U of T president: Meric Gertler 16th president in university's history". Meric Gertler, has been dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science – U of T’s largest and most diverse academic division – since December 1, 2008. He joined the faculty in the Department of Geography in 1983 after receiving his doctorate from Harvard University. A Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a member of the Academy of Social Sciences in the United Kingdom, he is the author, co-author or co-editor of more than 80 scholarly publications and six books. His academic work focuses on the economies of cities, the urban foundations of innovation, and the role of creativity, culture and diversity in urban life.Gertler said he is deeply honoured to be appointed to this position. The Innovation Policy Lab

The Munk School of Global Affairs announced the launch of the Innovation Policy Lab. In addtion to PROGRIS, David Wolfe is now Director of this exciting new lab that will pool the knowledge that scholars at the Munk School and from across the University of Toronto have generated about “demand-driven” innovation and develop shared explanations of the impact of policy on innovation around the world. 21-Sep-12

Growing Innovation Ecosystems: University-Industry Knowledge Transfer and Regional Economic Development in Canada

In this knowledge synthesis paper on leveraging investments in HERD , Allison Bramwell, Nicola Hepburn and David A. Wolfe, outline several institutional factors and policies that build the Canadian university’s capacity to respond to the continually changing R&D and knowledge requirements of local firms, build the absorptive capacity of local firms to make use of this knowledge, and build the human capital, finance capital and intellectual property that underpins local knowledge flows. 15-May-12

Meric Gertler Receives Honorary Degree from Lund University

Meric Gertler, FRSC, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science, the Goldring Chair in Canadian Studies and a Professor of Geography and Planning at the University of Toronto, received an honorary doctorate of philosophy from Lund University, Sweden on May 25. He was honoured for his contributions to our understanding of innovation, creativity and culture as drivers of the economic dynamism of city-regions. His publications related to these topics include six books and more than 80 journal articles and book chapters. He has also been a frequent advisor to government agencies at all levels, both in Canada and abroad, as well as to multilateral organizations such as the European Union and the OECD. With David Wolfe, he was a founding co-director of the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems (PROGRIS) at the Munk School of Global Affairs and has also served as director of the Department of Geography’s Program in Planning. 25-May-12

RBC Chair's Conference: Interview on CBC's Metro Morning

David A. Wolfe, RBC Chair in Public and Economic Policy, appeared on CBC's Metro Morning today. He was interviewed by Matt Galloway who spoke with him about Toronto's economic prospects. Professor Wolfe is the RBC Chair in Public and Economic Policy at the Munk School of Global Affairs and has organized a one-day conference called the RBC conference on civic engagement and leadership. 26-April-10

Conference Board Of Canada Announcement

2008-09 CIBC Scholar-In-Residence to Explore Role of Cities in Knowledge-Based Economy

TORONTO, May 5, 2008 - The Conference Board of Canada today announced the selection of David A. Wolfe as the 2008-09 CIBC Scholar-in-Residence Chair. The Scholar-in-Residence Program is a research program funded by CIBC and administered by The Conference Board of Canada. During his one-year term, beginning in September 2008, Professor Wolfe will explore the role of cities in a knowledge-based economy.

Dr. Wolfe is Professor of Political Science, and Co-Director of the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems, at the Centre for International Studies at the University of Toronto Mississauga. He is the 5th scholar in the CIBC Scholar-in-Residence Program, begun in 2005 to bring globally renowned academic scholars to the Conference Board to study topics of public policy debate.
The three themes of Professor Wolfe’s research concern the way the economic dynamics of innovation, the social dynamics of innovation, and the mechanisms of political governance, affect the role of cities in a knowledge-based economy. He will also examine innovative transformations of so-called “old” cities.

In addition to undertaking research, Dr. Wolfe will collaborate with staff at the Conference Board throughout the year, and present a lecture of his research findings in May 2009. The program will culminate with the publication of a book in the fall of 2009—the 3rd in the CIBC Scholar-in-Residence series.

By financially supporting the Scholar-in-Residence program, CIBC continues its tradition of advancing research and dialogue on issues of national and global importance.

 

Gertler/Wolfe - 2008 Awards of Excellence Recipients

David Wolfe and Meric Gertler have been awarded the Carolyn Tuohy Impact on Public Policy Award, recognizing excellence in teaching, research, and the impact of scholarship on public policy. The award will be presented to Professors Gertler and Wolfe, Co-Directors for the Program on Globalization and Regional Innovation Systems,  at the Awards of Excellence ceremony on Wednesday, April 16th. 31-Mar-08
