About us

The Toronto Region Statistics Canada Research Data Centre (RDC) is part of the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) a national network of centres offering secure access to detailed to Statistics Canada's detailed microdata including census data, as well as to an increasing number of administrative data sets. RDCs are secure computer labs where approved researchers can access and analyze confidential microdata. All RDCs are networked together, allowing researchers to access their projects and teams across Canada.

The Toronto RDC is located on the 7th floor of Robarts Library at the University of Toronto, hosted by the Division of the Vice President Research and Innovation, in partnership with Ryerson, York and Nipissing universities (see links for branch sites). RDCs are funded by SSHRC, CIHR, Canadian Foundation for Innovation (CFI), and partnership universities.

How to apply?

Researchers can apply for access to data by submitting a detailed proposal through the MicroData Access Portal. The proposal needs to include the following information:
    • A specific research question
    • The data required to address it
    • The statistical techniques to answer your research question
Before submitting an application for access, please check whether your research needs can be met using Statistics Canada public use microdata files (PUMFs) and codebooks made available through the Data Liberation Initiative (DLI). PUMFs and other public use datasets are also available through the data portals of affiliated universities (for U of T researchers, visit the Map and Data Library).
