LLEWELLYN & DE MACEDO ON TOP AT 1997 CANADIAN OPEN

97 Canadian Nationals
Shalom Park, Edmonton, Alberta
August 24, 1997

There was no shortage of world class performances today at the 1997 Canadian
Open. Kreg Llewellyn (Innisfail, AB) showed the crowd at Shalom Park what
being one of the top overall skiers in the world is all about. Llewellyn
swept all 3 events, taking the overall title. His slalom score of 2.5 @
11.25 metres seemed to be just the "warm-up" he needed to put in a six flip
trick performance of 10 290 points. Kreg wrapped up the afternoon soaring to
a 59.0 metre (194 feet) victory in the jump event. Canadian teammate Jim
Clunie (Saskatoon, SK) placed second in jump with a distance of 55.7 metres
(183 feet). Clunie had previously claimed first in the Mens 1 jump event on
Saturday with an astounding performance (in the rain!) of 58.8 metres (193
feet).

Kim de Macedo (Shawnigan Lake, BC) also put in a sweep by winning all three
of the Open Women's events. She won the jump with a distance of 39.7 metres
(130 feet). De Macedo's performances in the slalom and trick event victories
were 2.5 @ 12 metres and 4900 points, respectively.

SLALOM SHOWDOWN
It wasn't over!!!! To end the 97 Nationals, the top three slalom performers
went head to head and once again, Canadian Team members did not disappoint.
For the first time in 7 years, Kim de Macedo ran her 12 metre pass and
fought for a 0.5 @ 11.25 metre score. Kreg Llewellyn showed us what the
Canadian team is made of as he was the first skier of the event to run the
11.25 metre pass. He ended the afternoon with a 2 buoys (I think) @ 10.75
metre line run.

MORE CANADIAN OPEN HIGHLIGHTS
Canadian Junior Team members love to jump!! Clint Baikie (Campbell River,
BC) and Ashley Keindel (Caledon, ON) each broke the Canadian Jump records in
the respective divisions.

Baikie broke his the record for the fourth time in a row to put the Boys 3
National Jump record at 47.2 metres (155 feet). Baikie previously improved
the mark in the preliminary round at the Canada Games (44.9 m), then again
in the final round (45.5 m). He then did it again in the Boys 3 event on
Friday at the Nationals (46.5 m), followed with the finale today in the
Canadian Open.

Keindel's 35.3 metres (116 feet) broke the Girls 3 Canadian jump record
which was held by Kim de Macedo since 1989 at 34.8 metres.

The National Junior Team coach practiced what he must preach to his skiers
as he went out in the Men's jump event to break the Mens 2 Canadian jump
record. Joel McClintock jumped to a distance of 49.5 metres (162 feet) to
increase the standard previously held by his brother, Jeff (47.7 m).
