The three Behrs sisters
(left to right: Sofya, Tatiana, Elizaveta (Elisabeth))

Sofya Behrs (Tolstaia) had two sisters: Elisabeth (1843 - 1919) and Tatiana (1846 – 1925). Tolstoy was attracted to all three sisters at one time or another. He thought of proposing to Elisabeth but eventually chose Sofya. He was very fond of the youngest sister, Tatiana, who was only 16 when he married his wife and who became a model for Natasha in War and Peace.
