The vaulted room on the first floor of the house at Iasnaia Poliana, which Tolstoy used as his study for a total of 12 years, and in which he conceived and began War and Peace

In 1891, the artist Repin painted Tolstoy writing in this room. The massive rings in the vaulted ceiling are prototypes for the ones from which Tolstoy's character Levin, in Anna Karenina, was tempted to hang himself at the end of the novel.
