1890s – Worked on his book What is Art?, in which he elaborated his aesthetics. Of his own works, he praised only the stories "The Prisoner of the Caucasus" ("Kavkazskii plennik") and "God Sees the Truth, but Waits" ("Bog pravdu vidit, da ne skoro skazhet") (both 1872).
