Final Years and Death

1910 – Tolstoy left Iasnaia Poliana, fell ill on a train, and died in the station master's house at Astapovo on November 7 (Julian calendar). In this photo, Sofya Tolstaia is standing at the window of the house. Tolstoy's followers refused to allow her to see her husband until shortly before his death, when he was already unconscious.
