Sergei Rakhmaninov (1873-1943)

The outstanding composer and pianist Sergei Rakhmaninov was not close to Tolstoy, but he was present at the writer's Moscow home in the district of Khamovniki when Shaliapin performed there on January 9, 1900. Subsequently Goldenveizer performed works by Rakhmaninov for Tolstoy. In Tolstoy's opinion, "Rakhmaninov's works are uneven, with some parts better, and others less good."
