Between 1878 and 1892, and especially after the assassination of Tsar Alexander II in 1881, the revolutionary movement in Russia grew more radical and the response of the government — more brutal.
I. E. Repin's (1844-1930) two renditions (see previous image) of this subject vividly portray this change.
