HTML and XHTML Document Type Definitions

This page lists and provides links to standard DTDs and SGML declarations for HTML and its successor language, XHTML. This is a local collection of resources: references are provided naming the original locations of this material.

This page also provides links to HTML documents describing the content rules defined by the DTDs. These links are named HTML Analysis of DTD. These resources were created using a modified version of Earl Hood's dtd2html package (any mistakes are, of course, mine).

DTD differences -- Please also note the useful DTD differences utiltity, which lets you select two different HTML DTDs and see a list of the differences between them. This is very useful for seeing how the HTML DTDs have evolved over time.

NOTE: -- Newer browser, such as Internet Explorer 5 or Navigator 6, will attempt to process the DTD files, and will not display them as plain text. If this happens to you, simply right click the mouse button and select "Save as..." to save the file to disk. YOu can then view the content using your local text editor.
