HTTPD Servers

There are two commonly used servers, from NCSA and CERN. They both offer similar features, although there are important differences. This list points to relevant introductory documents for these servers (and some others that are important) and points out some of the differences and features. For additions and suggestions to this list mail ian.graham@utoronto.ca (please refer to the document you are commenting on).

NCSA httpd
The NCSA httpd-1.1 is an http/1.0 compatible server. Its most important feature is the ability to allow server-side includes (i.e. files or script output can be embedded within a document, on the fly).
CERN httpd
Also popular, in part because it is able to act as a proxy server (essential if you are behind a firewall) , and to allow caching when it runs as a proxy.
MacHTTP/WebSTAR
Server for the Macintosh. A remarkably complete server, with lots of supporting software for AppleScripting and AppleSearching. This package is highly recommended.
Plexus (a Perl Server)
This server is written in Perl, and supports HTTP/1.0 protocols.
HTTPS for Windows/NT
Server for Windows/NT, both Intel and DEC-Alpha architectures.
http://www.compusource.co.za -- Power Web Server++ for OS/2
Server for OS/2. Pretty good, I'm told.

The World Wide WEB F.A.Q list also shows where to get servers.
