Founded in 2001, the Humanities Initiative at the Munk School of Global Affairs (University of Toronto) specializes in the interdisciplinary study of opera. Initiated jointly by musicologist Caryl Clark and literary theorist Linda Hutcheon, the project has expanded, its organizing committee now including musicologist Sherry Lee and literary specialist, Katie Larson. The annual symposium series is co-organized in partnership with the Canadian Opera Company (COC), and targets both academic and general audiences.

The Humanities Initiative is in association with the Faculty of Music and the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Toronto.
