Professor, Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Sciences Centre, University of Toronto
Director, University of Toronto Maternal Infant and Reproductive Health Research Unit (MIRU) at the Centre for Research in Women’s Health.

Mary Hannah received her undergraduate, medical and specialty training at McGill University, Montreal, Canada (BSc, 1968, MDCM, 1972, FRCSC, 1978); and her graduate training in clinical epidemiology at McMaster University, Hamilton, Canada (MSc 1984). Her research has focussed on answering important (and controversial) questions about the effectiveness of care of pregnant women and their infants as well as about the care of women with reproductive health problems. This has resulted in the development of an international collaborative network and the co-ordination of large CIHR-funded multicentre randomised controlled trials, such as the Canadian Multicentre Postterm Pregnancy Trial, the International TermPROM Study, and the International Term Breech Trial. The results of these trials have had a major impact on clinical practice in Canada and other countries. Her current work involves mentoring new principal investigators in multicentre trial research, which she did until June 30, 2005, through her work as Director of the Maternal Infant and Reproductive Health Research Unit (MIRU) at the Centre for Research in Women’s Health. MIRU is the Clinical and Data Co-ordinating Centre for multicentre trials. Ongoing funded trials, as of June 30, 2005, that she is involved in, include the International Twin Birth Study (PI: J Barrett), Multiple Courses of Antenatal Corticosteroids Trial (PI: K Murphy), Control of Hypertension in Pregnancy (PI: L Magee), Early External Cephalic Version 2 Trial (PI: E Hutton).
