Posttranslation modifications on histone tails play a crucial role in

the proper execution of cell differentiation programs (e.g. stem cell

differentiation in mammals). One such modification, the programmed methylation and demethylation of lysine residues on histones tails, is crucial for the proper expression of many developmentally important genes during differentiation. In yeast, demethylation events are executed by members of the conserved Jumonji family which include the histone H3 lysine 4 demethylase Jhd2. My project involves investigating the effects of Jhd2 demethylation of lysine 4 during sporulation, a critical differentiation program in yeast.
