The protocols utilized by the institutional electronic mail service will interoperate with, at minimum, the strategic communications infrastructure. This means that open, non-proprietary transport protocols must be used in connecting all components of the service to each other. A communications infrastructure dedicated to the sole use of electronic mail is to be avoided. The University's strategic communications infrastructure currently requires the use of the TCP transport protocol and the UDP datagram service. Services built over other transport protocols, such as IPX, SNA or DECNET will not be considered.
