Occupational and environmental health activities have had a long history at the University of Toronto, initially in the School of Hygiene and Public Health. In the 1970's, when the School was integrated into the Faculty of Medicine, the Occupational and Environmental Health Unit was established within the Division of Community Health. At the same time, a Department of Occupational and Environmental Health was established at St Michael's Hospital. The Gage Research Institute, a private charitable foundation was established in 1971. It provided support for the Gage Research Program whose members form the nucleus of the Division of Occupational Medicine in the Department of Medicine. In 1995 the Occupational and Environmental Health Unit, the Division of Occupational Medicine and the Gage Research Program and the Department of Occupational and Environmental Health at St Michael's Hospital amalgamated their activities into the Gage Occupational and Environmental Health Unit (GOEHU).
