1884 – With the help of Chertkov, Tolstoy founded the publishing house Intermediary (Posrednik) to provide reading for the people. It published inexpensive books by Tolstoy and others in millions of copies. Contents ranged from Greek and Latin works simplified for a popular audience to practical treatises on medicine or farming.
