Nikolai Andreev
(1873– 1932)
N. A. Andreev sculpted a portrait of Tolstoy in 1905 when he was working in the impressionist style. In 1909, he also sculpted a monument to N. Gogol in Moscow. During the Soviet period Andreev produced numerous monuments to various revolutionaries and historical figures (G. Danton, A. Hertsen, N. Ogarev, A. Ostrovsky) and did sketches of various contemporaries (A. Gorky, V. Lenin, I. Stalin, K. Stanislavsky). "L. N. Tolstoy at work" by Andreev is presented here together with one of the sketches that the sculptor made in preparation for his work.
