The OBJECT element is a proposed standards-based element, designed to augment and replace the current embedding elements IMG, EMBED and APPLET. OBJECT is still under development, although the specification appears quite stable, so that the following description is likely to reflect the properties of the standardized element. For additiona information on OBJECT, you should read the OBJECT element draft document at the W3C Web site: http://www.w3.org/pub/WWW/TR/WD-object.html. as well as the HTML 4.0 specifications and the section on the OBJECT element: http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40/.
NOTE -- As of December, 1998, both Netscape Navigator 4 and Internet Explorer 4 support OBJECT to a limited degree. However, both implementations are very buggy, so that for now you are best advised to use the APPLET and EMBED elements, and avoid using OBJECT.
