It is possible to use a URL to reference a Usenet newsgroups, accessed from a remote NNTP News server. This is done using the news: URL. The specification for the news URL is
news:news.group
where news.group is the name of the newsgroup. Note that this does not specify the NNTP news server: this must be specified elsewhere. For example, Web clients on UNIX machines require that you set the environment variable NNTPSERVER to the desired news server. Most browsers let the user set the location of an NNTP server in a configuration or preferences menu.
Several browser also support news server specifications in the URL itselv, via an extenson to the URL syntax. The format is:
news://domain.name.edu:port/news.group
Where domain.name.edu
is the name of hte server,
port
is the port number of the remote NNTP server,
and news.group
is the desired newsgroup. This
format is supported by many -- but not all -- browsers.
