WAIS servers (a type of Web-accessible database) can be accessed via URLs in a manner similar to that used to access HTTP servers. The major difference is in the file specification: here we must pass the correct search instructions to the WAIS server, in addition to information about what is to be searched.
The standard form for accessing a WAIS server is:
wais://host_and_port/database[?search]
where the optional string ?search is a list of search instructions passed to the wais server -- the format for this string is defined by the WAIS protocol, and is quite complicated.
You won't see a lot of WAIS URLs today -- WAIS servers are in large part obsolete, and there are very few in active service.
