Structural Proteomics in Toronto

Alexei Savchenko

My research has been directed towards understanding the structural determinants of protein function. I am particularly interested in proteins participating in bacterial adaptation to the changes in chemical environment. Currently we are focusing on bacterial one-component systems, which regulate the transcription in response to the presence of different small molecules – effectors. Hundreds of such proteins are identified by the presence of known DNA binding motif (usually Helix-Turn-Helix) in each bacterial genomes, while the effector molecules and molecular mechanisms behind their recognition by one-component systems remain unknown.
