Jörg Schendel obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 at the University of Heidelberg with a dissertation on “The Mandalay Economy: Upper Burma’s External Trade, c. 1850–90.” Since then, he has been teaching Southeast Asian history at the Humboldt University at Berlin and the University of Toronto. His current research interests focus on the emergence of capitalism in precolonial and colonial Burma, the importance of legal institutions for socioeconomic change and its connections with state formation.
