Call for Applications for YNU Japan Short Visit Fellowship

The Global Studies Program for Multicultural Societies at Yokohama National University

Since 2008, Yokohama National University (YNU)’s Global Studies Program for Multicultural Societies has offered opportunities for international students to exchange ideas and discuss critical issues shared across various regions. In the 2014-15 academic year, YNU invites two U of T graduate students in humanities or social sciences to stay in Japan for four months and will provide them with an opportunity to conduct their own research as well as to exchange ideas with YNU students.

Deadline for application is Monday, April 7, 2014 at 5:00 p.m. – Late submissions will not be accepted.

Accepting Nominations for Dr. David Chu Leadership Awards 2014

This award recognizes student leadership and academic achievement in pursuing and promoting extra-curricular research related to the Asia-Pacific region. Nominees must be current undergraduate or graduate students in the Faculty of Arts & Science at the University of Toronto. Nominations may be made by Asian Institute core faculty members. Up to six winners will be selected and acknowledged with a $1,000–$2,000 prize.

2013–14 Imaging the Asia Pacific Photo Contest Winners Announced

In fall 2013 the Dr. David Chu Program in Asia-Pacific Studies announced the second annual Imaging the Asia-Pacific Photo Contest. Open to all students at the University of Toronto, the contest invited entrants to imagine and represent the Asia-Pacific from unique perspectives.

At a reception in early February to celebrate the new year, Dr. David Chu Professor and Director in Asia-Pacific Studies, Takashi Fujitani, announced the winning photos. The Grand Prize was awarded to Glen Chua, a PhD student in Anthropology, for his photograph “School, Pyongyang.” Chua took the photo while in North Korea.

The runner-up photos belong to fourth-year Asia-Pacific Studies student Betty Xie and Collaborative Master’s Program in Asia-Pacific Studies student Hao Wang. Xie’s photo, “Asia is ‘Flat’: The Voyage,” was taken in Hong Kong. Wang’s photo, “The Celebration of My Sorrow,” was taken in Thailand.

The winning photos will be displayed at the Asian Institute and all submissions will be displayed on the Dr. David Chu Program in Asia-Pacific Studies website. The Chu program plans to continue the photo contest every year and encourages all students at the University of Toronto to consider entering the next contest. Details will be announced in fall 2014.

Asia is ‘Flat’: The Voyage, by Betty Xie. “Where is Asia heading today? We all ask. In this photograph, taken alongside Victoria Harbour at the heart of Hong Kong, a ferry is surely breaking waves of the sea and silence of the night. Yet it does not transcend beyond the fragmented passage of time, readily reflected by the overlapping city light in the background. The ferry is in motion, but time has been suspended. We might ask, by whom?”

The Celebration of My Sorrow, by Hao Wang. “Statues of the God-like King Rama V (Chulalongkorn) and fellow Buddhist saints in Wat Berng Phra Archan, central Thailand.”

Fundraiser Breakfast Helps Bring Relief to the Philippines

In the spirit of damayan, or “mutual aid in time of need,” the Asian Institute and the Dr. David Chu Program in Asia-Pacific Studies held a fundraiser breakfast on November 27, 2013, to aid victims of Typhoon Haiyan. Thanks to your support, we are pleased to announce that we raised close to $4,000 in donations, which was matched by the Government of Canada to bring the total to almost $8,000. The proceeds have been donated to the Canadian Red Cross and Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders Canada for Typhoon Haiyan relief.

As the media has reported, sustained winds reached 250 kilometres per hour, and with wind gusts of more than 300 kph, Haiyan was the most powerful tropical cyclone in recorded history to make landfall. It is estimated that the typhoon and its aftermath have affected more than 11 million people and the death toll is mounting. Our hearts go out to those who have suffered directly and their loved ones, many of whom are our neighbours, colleagues, and friends.

Richard Fung Retrospective Draws Wide Audience

ReOrientations: A Retrospective on the Works of Richard Fung took place this weekend with great success. The film screenings and talks drew wide audiences from across U of T and beyond. The event closed with a packed screening of Dal Puri Diaspora at Bloor Hot Docs Cinema on Saturday evening, followed by a celebratory reception at the Munk School of Global Affairs.
