Index Librorum Expurgatorum with tiny figurines from the Fisher Library #tinytuesday series

By Instagram user: fisherlibrary

In the sixteenth century, the Holy Office developed a variation of the 'Index Librorum Prohibitorum' known as the 'Index Librorum Expurgatorum'. Its purpose was to assist librarians in the partial censorship of works by otherwise orthodox authors by indicating exact page numbers and sentences to be expurgated from the offending text using a black ink pen. This edition of the Index Expurgatorum was printed in France in 1599 (PJ Carefoote).
