U of T researchers win prestigious Killam Prizes On Apr. 18 the Canada Council for the Arts named Elizabeth Edwards, Steven Narod and Daniel Trefler the winners of one of the most prestigious awards in Canada – the Killam Prize – for their leading research in the fields of engineering, medicine and economics. In addition, U of T’s Arthur Ripstein is receiving a two-year Killam Research Fellowship. In total, the Killam program is providing $440,000 to U of T researchers. |

Joe Pennachetti on cities and the role of the University of Toronto
Joe Pennachetti, Toronto’s former top civil servant, joined the University of Toronto in 2015 as a senior adviser at the Institute on Municipal Finance & Governance (IMFG) and the School of Public Policy & Governance (SPPG) and as a senior adviser at the Global Cities Institute and executive adviser to the World Council on City Data. He spoke about the role he sees for U of T in supporting cities and the increasing importance of civic government.

It’s a counter-intuitive argument: present-day policy-makers responding to global financial crises could learn a lot from the novels of Nathaniel Hawthorne, or the memoirs of Henry David Thoreau. But Cristina D’Amico of the department of English used it to win this year’s Three Minute Thesis competition at the University of Toronto. |

“Our feelings and intuitions about sounds influence what we feel is okay for names of specific items or brands,” says U of T’s Cristina Rabaglia. “If you name something in a way that isn’t intuitive, it could decrease the likelihood that people will want to interact with that product.” Rabaglia recently published a study with U of T’s Sam Maglio that adds significantly to the existing body of knowledge about sound symbolism, the intuitive understanding of the meaning of specific sounds. |

The National Day of Mourning, officially recognized by the federal government in 1991, is held annually on Apr. 28 in approximately 80 countries around the world and has been adopted by the AFL-CIO and the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions.
