The Credit Valley–Trillium Merger: Partnering for Patients

Susan KwolekBy: Susan Kwolek, Senior Vice President Patient Care Services and Programs, Credit Valley Hospital

On April 7, 2011, The Credit Valley Hospital (CVH) and Trillium Health Centre (THC) announced a voluntary merger (contingent on due diligence). In recent years, the two organizations have worked together on a number of initiatives, and have established successful partnerships at the clinical and administrative levels. Their vision is to create a world-class patient-centred community academic health network that offers superior care to residents; trains and educates health-care workers, including physicians; and drives innovative approaches to delivering health care that will improve the system both locally and nationally.

This decade, the population of the catchment area CVH and THC serve is projected to grow about 20%, placing enormous pressure on the health-care system in the Mississauga Halton Local Health Integration Network, west Toronto, and surrounding areas. The CVH and THC boards of directors believe that a merger is the logical next step for the two organizations, and the best way to further improve the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of health services.

This merger is not about savings, but about meeting the projected needs of the one million residents in our community – within our community. One of the key principles of this merger is that any financial savings will be directed back into front-line care, and no front-line nurses or allied health professionals will lose their jobs.

The new network’s vision also supports the training and education of health-care workers and physicians, and provides a richness in learning within a real world context for students in the new Mississauga Academy of Medicine, University of Toronto.
