IHPME Director's Message

Adalsteinn BrownThere is a lot happening at the Institute of Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation these days.

We are now, for example, in the midst of developing our next five-year strategic plan. This plan will have to build off the Institute’s strengths and the careful stewardship of my predecessor, Louise Lemieux-Charles. As part of the planning process, I have had the pleasure of talking to more than 90 faculty, students, alumni, and staff over the last eight weeks about their goals for the Institute. It is clear from these conversations that almost everyone recognizes the leadership role that the Institute plays, and many have provided exciting ideas for growth and development.

I urge you all to send any comments you might have on future plans for the Institute directly to me. We will release a draft strategy before the University’s winter-holiday break, and I would welcome comments on that as well.

However, it is not all planning at the Institute. I am pleased to report that two of our faculty – Raisa Deber and G. Ross Baker – have been inducted into the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

I am also pleased to report that the Institute was the recipient of a generous donation from Harry Perlstein that will support a student prize for work that can improve patient safety in non-acute settings. Combined with the gift from the Society of Graduates in honour of Louise Lemieux-Charles’ time as chair/director, we are in an excellent position to increase our recognition of student and alumni leadership in Canada’s health-care system.

I hope you enjoy this edition of IHPME Connection, and I wish you a safe and healthy holiday season.

Best,

Adalsteinn Brown
