IHPME Quality Leadership Project Launched

In mid-October 2012, the Quality Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) launched IDEAS (Improving and Driving Excellence Across Sectors). This new, province-wide applied learning strategy is intended to build capacity for major system transformation.

A learning program will be developed that includes clinical and process improvement, leadership development, and change management. The core program will be modelled on the Advanced Training Program (ATP), which was developed by Intermountain Healthcare in the United States and has been adapted in over 50 jurisdictions (including the National Health Service in the United Kingdom and Veterans Affairs in the United States).

Learning Sessions

The immediate priority has been to establish an External Advisory Group and four working groups to plan for the launch of the first Ontario program in fall of 2013. To help create a receptive context for this program, the MOHLTC has asked the Institute to develop a set of learning sessions. IHPME will partner with other groups to identify and deliver a program of activities in two areas:

  • A seminar series on international quality leadership aligned with system- transformation priorities. The series will be targeted to clinicians and administrators from health-care providers (across sectors, disciplines, institutional levels); policy-makers; and quality improvement and innovation hubs in Ontario.
  • A knowledge exchange series on Intermountain’s ATP. This series will be targeted primarily at the IDEAS advisory and working group members and potential IDEAS program faculty.

Project Team

Deborah Egan, a recent graduate of IHPME’s MHSc in Health Administration program, has joined the Institute to manage this project. She will work with Adalsteinn Brown and G. Ross Baker, and Aman Grewal will provide support.

The project team welcomes your insights and ideas on how to develop these activities to maximize their impact. Please feel free to share any suggestions or to ask for further information from Deborah. Visit her at 155 College Street, or contact her by e-mail.
