Dr. Lemieux-Charles Appointed to Science Advisory Board

Dr. Louise Lemieux-Charles, Chair of the Department of HPME, has been appointed for a three-year term to the Health Canada Science Advisory Board. The Science Advisory Board provides expert advice to the Minister of Health, the Honourable Ujjal Dosanjh, on substantive issues facing Health Canada . Dr. Lemieux-Charles is one of sixteen Board members, bringing her expertise on health care management and service delivery, organizational theory and behaviour and knowledge transfer in health care.


Dr. Ross Baker Presents at European Union Patient Safety Summit

In November 2005, the Patient Safety Summit hosted by Sir Liam Donaldson, Chief Medical Officer of the UK Department of Health was held as part of the 2005 UK Presidency of the European Union. Over three days, more than 500 policymakers, experts, clinical leaders and patient advocates met together in London . During the third session, Knowledge is the Enemy of Patient Care, HPME's Dr. Ross Baker presented with Dr. Lucian Leape of Harvard University in the session on the research agenda for understanding and improving patient safety. Drs. Baker and Leape discussed the impact of epidemiological studies of adverse events and their role in stimulating patient safety activities.

Dr. Baker is one of the lead investigators of the Canadian Adverse Events Study and was recognized along with Dr. Peter Norton as the winner in the Medical Research Category of the 2005 'Who's Who in Healthcare Awards' sponsored by Canadian Healthcare Manager.


Senator Hugh Segal Gives Keynote in January

The Department of HPME, the HPME Society of Graduates and the Canadian College of Health Services Executives are pleased to announce that Senator Hugh Segal will give the keynote at this year's joint professional education day in January. For more details, see the Alumni section of this newsletter.


MHSc Accreditors Praise Program

The accreditation of the MHSc in Health Administration by the Commission On Accreditation Of Healthcare Management Education was wrapped up at the end of November with site visits by members of the accrediting body. Their comments on the Master's program were extremely positive. At the debriefing session, the team noted that it was one of the strongest programs they had visited and they were impressed with the caliber of faculty and students as well as the commitment shown by the tutors, preceptors and alumni during their interactions with them. Results of the accreditation will be available in the Spring 2006.


HPME Research Day May 3, 2006

Spring will be here before you know it, so mark your calendars for the 2006 HPME Research Day on Wednesday May 3. Dr. Noralou P Roos will provide the keynote speech. Dr. Roos is a Professor in the Department of Community Health Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, University of Manitoba . She was founding Director of the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy and has been instrumental in developing the Population Health Research Data Repository. Dr. Roos currently holds a Canada Research Chair in Population Health Research.
