Cambodia: There is a close linkage between the Office of International Surgery and the Children's Surgical Centre, Phnom Penh, Cambodia. Canadian surgeons, fellows, medical students, nurses and therapists learn about reconstructive surgery, transfer skills and conduct research. The Office of International Surgery has been instrumental in the introduction of the tumescent technique for skin grafting, contracture release, splinting, physiotherapy and scar management to Cambodian doctors and other health providers. It has also been key in the introduction of the first school-based burns prevention program in Kampot Province, the creation of a burn prevention public service announcement for Cambodian TV. In late 2003, following the recommendations of a team of medical students sent to evaluate NGO resources for burn survivors in Phnom Penh, the OIS and CSC established an Acid Burn Survivors Support Group, which meets monthly and provides psycho-social, medical, legal and vocational support to acid burn victims in Phnom Pehn.
