OS / 2 WWW BROWSERS

At this time, the only native OS / 2 browser is IBM's own Web Explorer for Warp, which has been receiving favourable reviews for its ease of configuration and powerful multitasking abilities. If you'd be more comfortable using another browser, a number of them (including Netscape and certain versions of Mosaic) can be run under WinOS / 2, and are documented below.

IBM Web Explorer for OS / 2 Warp

Web Explorer for OS / 2 Warp represents IBM's foray into the WWW browser market. Features include multithreaded design, an internal 256-colour viewer, image drag-and-drop, presentation mode, user- definable document and image caching, and colour WYSIWYG printing. It is available for download from the IBM anonymous FTP site at ftp://ftp.ibm.net/pub/WebExplorer/web103.zip, as is an informative README file. For more general information on Web Explorer and OS/2 Internet tools, visit the IBM Internet Tools home page, at http://www.ibm.com/Internet/. You can also visit the WebExplorer informatio pages at http://www01.ny.us.ibm.net/emea/web.html, as well as the F.A.Q, at http://s6000.mainz.ibm.de/go/psserv/download/webexplorer/1_03/readme.html
Java Support -- a recent beta release of WebExplorer supports the Java language, and Java applets. YOu can find out all the details, and obtain the beta executable, at http://www.ics.raleigh.ibm.com/ics/give3.htm.

SPRY AIR Mosaic Express (demo)

This product was brought to you by SPRY, Inc., who were acquired by CompuServe Incorporated early in 1995. THe OS/2 compatible version was discontinued sometime in late 1995 - early 1996.

NCSA Mosaic for Windows

This package is developed by NCSA, the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, and is quite full featured. The latest version of WinMosaic is available for download via anonymous FTP from http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Software/WinMosaic/General.htm#obtain. There is also a WinMosaic Developers home page. The latter is very useful for getting WinMosaic up and running, and includes links to troubleshooting tips, documentation, and supplementary software. Earlier versions are available on NCSA's anonymous FTP server at ftp://ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu/Mosaic/Windows/old/.

Netscape for Windows

Developed by Netscape Communications, this is a fast and full-featured browser that has quickly become the most popular Web browser currently in use. If you're feeling particularly adventurous, you can download a copy of the recently released 1.2 Beta from the Netscape Anonymous FTP server at ftp://ftp.mcom.com/netscape1.1/windows. Netscape no longer makes available free copies of versions 1.1N, although you can purchase a copy at the Netscape General Store for U$39. The fully documented and supported Personal Edition is available for U$44.95, and includes dial-up access through a number of ISP's.

Note: There are separate 16- and 32-bit versions of Netscape for Windows 3.1 / 3.11 and Windows NT / 95 respectively. The 32-bit version of Netscape will not run under Windows 3.x, even with the Win32s 32-bit extension package, because Win32s does not support 32-bit API calls.

Note: The most recent release of Netscape is the Beta 6 of version 1.2, which has been designed for Windows 95 (although it runs under Windows 3.1 in the same was as did Netscape 1.1N). This Beta does not support all the features that the final version of Netscape Navigator 1.2--due out in September--will. These include drag-and-drop URLs; native Win95 dialogs; icon-URL links which can be placed on the desktop, inside folders, or embedded in documents; advanced bookmarking abilities; and an improved FTP download interface. For more information on version 1.2, see this press release. Evaluation copies of the Beta version are available for download from this convenient mirror-sites selector page. The latest supported version (1.1N) is available at the Netscape General Store* for U$39.

*Note: The above link to the Netscape General Store is a secure transaction (https:) link supported by Netscape only. Select this non-secure version if you aren't using Netscape, but would still like to look around without purchasing.
