High Performance Leadership Drives Innovation & Change
The highlight of the May 2007 SOG Education Day was the keynote given by self-proclaimed “flaming extrovert”, Bob Murphy, former CEO of the Baptist Hospital (the first hospital to win the Baldridge Award in the United States) and current Studer Group National Speaker and Coach. Murphy talked about his own leadership experiences and reviewed his recent study of high performing hospitals to look at the service excellence ‘must haves'. He provided vivid illustrations of the ways in which high performance leadership can transform organizations by empowering, motivating, and inspiring individuals and teams. His talk left the audience with a road map to improved organizational performance, better quality outcomes for patients, and marked improvements in customer service.
In continuing the theme of quality through leadership, HPME's Professor Ross Baker spoke about his lessons for creating organizations capable of improvement through the concept of ‘quality by design' and demonstrating his argument that cost and quality are not mutually exclusive. In a study of five high performing quality health care organizations, Baker looked at the drivers for innovation and strategy. The study found that in high performing organizations:
- key indicators and key projects will clearly point to the organization's strategy
- there are strong linkages between leaders for finance and quality
- the board agenda is balanced equally between finance and quality
The two guest speakers were then joined by panellists Geoff Morris (Oakville Family Health Team), Debbie Fischer (Assistant Deputy Ministry of Transition for the MOHLTC), and Tony Woolgar (CEO of the South West LHIN) as they discussed the role of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in stewardship; LHINs in promoting innovation, accountability, and collaboration; and front-line providers in changing the patient experience at the front-line.
