Peter C. Coyte

Dr. Peter C. Coyte, Professor, Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, University of Toronto.

Dr. Peter C. Coyte is a Professor of Health Economics in the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation at the University of Toronto. Prior to joining the University in 1987, Dr. Coyte was a member of the Econonics Department at the University of Alberta and, before that, at Simon Fraser University.

Dr. Coyte has published widely in the areas of health economics, health policy, and health services research. His studies have included the measurement of regional variations in health service utilization, evaluations of the cost-effective provision of health care services, and assessments of health service finance, delivery and organization.

In 2002, Dr. Coyte was elected President of the Canadian Health Economics Research Association and been instrumental in championing the evolution of that organization to form the Canadian Association for Health Services and Policy Research, a multi-disciplinary membership-based association dedicated to improving the quality, relevance and application of health services and policy research and policy-research for both inter-discipinary researchers as well as for users of research.

Dr. Coyte has been retained as a consultant at various, International, national and local organizations and has been an active participant in health policy debates. He has been recognized for his scholarly contributions through receipt of a CHSRF/CIHR Health Services Chair, a CIHR senior Investigator Award, a Kappa Delta Award from the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and a Young Investigator Award from the Association of University Programs in Health Administration.

Dr. Coyte has been engaged in collaborative research and knowledge translation activities with participants from industry, goverment and academia. He has received an Order-in-Council appointment to the Board of the North York Community Care Access Centre, where he is Treasurer, and has served as an elected member of the Board of the Ontario Association of Community Care Access Centres.

CHSRF/CIHR Health Services Chair
A total of twelve chairs were established through support from the CHSRF (50%), CIHR (40%) and regional co-sponsors (10%). Seven award holders had health services orientation while the other five came from the nursing research community. These ten-year awards provided full salary support and an annual allowance to seed education, mentoring and research. CHSRF/CIHR Chair Awards focused on capacity building, bringing new researchers to the point where they can independently contribute to applied health services and policy research issues.
