Kierkegaard and Embodiment

Abstract

Through this talk-cum-discussion, we will explore what Kierkegaard may have thought about the novel and recent notion of embodiment held by some cognitive scientists, the idea that the mind is distributed throughout our nervous system and socio-cultural practices. The purpose is to familiarize ourselves with the advantages, and perhaps some drawbacks, of the embodiment thesis, as well as clarify Kierkegaard’s thought in relation to this contemporary, psychological theory—all with a view to better understanding human nature and/or his account of it. To chart the territory, several views are considered about the relationship between Kierkegaard’s thought and the embodiment thesis, one negative, one positive, and a third no effect, or “hands-off,” position. Where we locate Kierkegaard vis-à-vis the embodiment thesis will be arrived at through discussion, and perhaps differently for various participants.
