Abstract:

The focus is on basic theological and philosophical views that are evident in the text Three Discourses at the Communion on Fridays. Undergirding each discourse is the earnestness of making a choice as to whether to go with crowd or part company and do in eranest one's life work in which one stands related to God absolutely.. Each discourse considers a different life situation that can be transformative in life - seeking God, resolution of duty that transforms romantic love to a love that conquers all, and teh awareness of one's mortality. The lecture considers the responsibilities to others or society that flow out of genuine commitent to stay related to God. For, according to Kierkegaard, faith is becoming related to others through an absolute relation to God, in earnest. In that faith stance by which we shape our life, exposure to the possibility of self-renunciation and suffering is inevitable.
