Program Objectives

Molecular medicine is an emerging field of translational and clinical research whose ultimate aim is to turn discoveries in molecular genetics, genomics and proteomics into advances in health care. The long term goals of the Collaborative Training Graduate Program in Molecular Medicine are to train the next generation of scientists and clinician scientists in molecular medicine and to foster the development of molecular medicine as an academic discipline. We are working towards these goals by:

offering a complementary series of courses designed to give graduate students and physicians a solid, formal grounding in molecular medicine, human genetics, genomics, proteomics, bioinformatics, bioethics, and molecular epidemiology.

providing the means for graduate students and physicians working on molecular medicine research projects to be exposed to a broad range of issues and approaches in this translational discipline.

facilitating interactions among graduate students, MD trainees, bench researchers and clinicians across departments and institutions via participation in a common series of student seminars, supervisory committees, journal clubs, seminars/symposia and retreats.

Organization and Faculty

The molecular medicine training program is designed to be a core activity of a future Interdepartmental Program in Molecular Medicine. The training program is a cooperative venture between the Institute for Medical Sciences (IMS), the Department of Medicine and the Department of Molecular and Medical Genetics. We anticipate other departments lending formal adminstrative support to the program in the future. The training program is governed by a Steering Committee, whose current members are: Stephen Meyn (Chair), Lucy Osborne, Christopher Pearson and Johanna Rommens.  

Our faculty includes 14 PhDs, 8 MD/PhDs, and 9 MDs from the Departments of Medicine, Paediatrics, Surgery, Obstetrics/Gynecology, Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Pharmacology, Psychiatry, Public Health Sciences, Immunology, Molecular & Medical Genetics, and Medical Biophysics.  The research faculty are drawn from the Faculty of Medicine of the University and affiliated hospitals and research institutions.
