The components
of the institutional electronic mail service
visible to the client
must be able to operate
within a heterogeneous client environment.
It is explicitly a design assumption
that the client environment
may include:
- IBM-PC style personal computers, running one of:
- Macintosh System 6 and 7.
- Unix-based platforms, including:
- Sun Microsystems
- DEC RISC
- Silicon Graphics
- IBM RISC
- DEC VMS systems
- asynchronous terminals
- IBM 3270-style terminals
It may be necessary for the service to restrict the scope
of the supported platform environments
to a well-defined subset
of these platforms.
