WHEN IS THE SUMMER SCHOOL?

Monday, June 25 through to Wednesday, June 27, 2007.
Preschool will take place on Sunday June 24, 2007.
This year Summer School is one day shorter.

WHERE DOES THE SUMMER SCHOOL TAKE PLACE?
Crowne Plaza Toronto Don Valley, Toronto.

WHEN DOES REGISTRATION BEGIN?
Registration has begun!
Registration can be done electronically on this web site, and by fax or mail. For up-to-date information on registration, and to register electronically, go to registration.

WHEN DOES REGISTRATION END?
Early Bird registration ends: April 30, 2007
Final Registration ends: June 15, 2007

HOW MUCH DOES THE SUMMER SCHOOL COST (these costs do not include accommodation costs - for more information see LOCATION AND ACCOMMODATION) ?
If you register before April 30 (Early Bird Registration) the Summer School fee is $475 (including tax)
If you register on or after May 1, (Standard Registration) the Summer School fee is $525 (including tax).

Preschool courses are offered on Sunday, June 24. Fees are as follows:
Preschool A Health Promotion 101: $50
Preschool B Evaluation 101: $100
Preschool C Reseach and Ethics in Health Promotion: $100

(Registration fees include: courses, course materials, snacks, lunch, access to all facilities throughout the day. )

CAN I TAKE PRESCHOOL AND NOT ATTEND THE REST OF THE SUMMER SCHOOL?
Yes.

CAN I REGISTER NOW AND PAY LATER?
Payment by cheque can follow your registration. Please add a note to that effect on the registration form if faxed. Payment must be received by June 14th to confirm registration.

ARE THERE SUBSIDIES?
There are subsidies available for the following two groups:

Those attending French-language sessions : Thanks to special funding, partial subsidies (for travel and lodging only) will be awarded to Summer School participants interested in joining the French-language component of the Summer School (Series 2). Only Francophones living or working in Ontario are eligible. Participants need to indicate their interest in receiving a subsidy on the registration form in the appropriate place. and contact the Summer School Coordinator immediately after you have registered at 416-469-4632 or at hpss@rogers.com.

PRIZE: A bursary of $ 500 toward participation at the Summer School will be awarded at the Forum communautaire organized by the Réseau de Santé, March 20-21 in London. Only participants at the Forum will be eligible for this prize. 

Nurses: Nurses may apply to the Ontario Nurses Association for professional development fees to help pay for registration at HPSS. We will post the RNAO's 2007 forms here when they are available. Applications should be submitted directly to the RNAO. Membership in ONA not required.

IS THERE A STUDENT PRICE?
If there are spaces available (after registration ends), students may attend at a reduced rate ($300 including taxes). Please contact the HPSS Coordinator to be placed on a waiting list, and contacted after registration ends.

CAN I RECEIVE AN ACADEMIC CREDIT BY ATTENDING THE SUMMER SCHOOL?
This had been attempted in the past, but recently there has not been enough interest and only a certificate of attendance will be available this year.

IS THERE A LIMIT TO THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE WHO ATTEND?
No.

IS SUMMER SCHOOL FOR BEGINNERS ONLY?
No! HPSS provides programming for all, with cutting-edge courses and high-quality instruction, designed for those with experience in the field, and for those who are just starting out. We encourage managers to attend to. 

CAN I SHARE THE WEEK WITH ANOTHER PARTICIPANT FROM MY WORKPLACE?

HPSS is designed to be a continuous learning experience. For effective learning, we strongly recommend against sharing the week.


CAN I SHARE A ROOM?
Yes, the cost of a room can be halved by sharing it. Family members may also share a room, however, all additional costs must be covered by the participant.

If you would like to share a room, but have no identified a room-mate, please indicate so on your registration form. If possible and appropriate, we will place you with another participant who is seeking a room-mate.

IS THERE PARKING AT THE HOTEL?
Yes, there is metered parking for day guests just outside the hotel. Parking fees are included in the accommodation costs charged to overnight guests.

IS THE HOTEL NEAR DOWNTOWN TORONTO?
No, the hotel is located in mid-north-east Toronto. Going downtown by car could take 20-30 minutes. HPSS will provide a bus for participants who wish to explore downtown Toronto, on Tuesday, June 26. Taking the bus is free of charge, but pre-registration and a $20 deposit necessary. (The $20 is returned when the bus is loaded.)

IS THERE A SWIMMING POOL AT THE HOTEL?
Yes, there is an outdoor and indoor swimming pool.

CAN I ATTEND SERIES 1/FIRST PEOPLES' TOOLBOX SESSIONS IF I'M NOT ABORIGINAL?
Yes, everyone is welcome.

ARE THERE PREREQUISITES OR CAN ANYONE ATTEND?
There are no pre-requisites. For those who are new in the field, we recommend that you take Preschool courses, Health Promotion 101 and Evaluation 101.

WHO ATTENDS THE SUMMER SCHOOL?
Participants come from a rich variety of professional backgrounds. Typically, participants come from health and social services (including housing and child care) and education. Both those experienced in the field, and those who are starting out attend. They are front-line workers and managers, students and teachers and scholars. Most participants are from Ontario, but each year we welcome participants from other parts of Canada and the world.

CAN YOU COME AND TALK ABOUT IT AT MY WORKPLACE?
If your workplace is in Toronto, or a committee member lives in your community, we would be happy to send someone to talk to your colleagues.

I AM TRAVELING FROM A DISTANCE. CAN I STAY OVERNIGHT AT THE FACILITY BEFORE AND AFTER HPSS BEGINS (ON JUNE 23 or 24 OR JUNE 27)?
Yes you can. Please ensure that you indicate the extra night(s) accommodation required when you register.  Remember to add the cost of each additional night (on faxed/mailed registration forms only, if you register/pay online, the extra cost will be automatically calculated).

WHAT TIME DOES THE SUMMER SCHOOL RUN DURING THE WEEK?
9-5 on Monday and Tuesday, and 9-3 on Wednesday. Lunch is from 12:30-1:30pm each day.

WHEN IS ON-SITE REGISTRATION AT THE SUMMER SCHOOL?
Registration will begin on Sunday and continue on Monday morning at 8 a.m.

WHAT WILL I NEED FOR ON-SITE REGISTRATION?
You will not need anything in particular for registration. If you are staying overnight you will go directly to their reception desk and sign in and get your key to your room. If the HPSS registration desk is open, you can collect your kit.

WHERE WILL CLASSES TAKE PLACE? HOW WILL I KNOW WHERE TO GO?
All classes will take place at the overnight facility. Class locations will be clearly marked when you are at the summer school.
