Director's Message

Lemieux-CharlesIn my previous director's message (Fall 2011), I had the pleasure of outlining some of the features and expected benefits of our transformation into the Institute of Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME). Now, I would like to share with you some of the results of the external review that took place January 12-13, 2012.

External Review

The three external reviewers – from the Université de Montréal, Harvard Medical School, and the University of Pittsburgh – were unanimous in declaring that IHPME is a dynamic and productive unit. They observed that our training programs are high calibre and serve a varied clientele, and they praised the quality of faculty members’ research.

The reviewers also made several observations and suggestions that will help to guide the Institute over the next five years. In particular, they noted:

  • Succession planning will be a critical success factor in IHPME’s ongoing success.
  • Recruitment of new faculty – especially at the intermediate level – will ensure continued productivity.
  • The Institute is well positioned nationally and globally to build on its substantial strengths.

I believe that the entire IHPME community ought to be very pleased by the outcomes of this review process. And I hope faculty members take away a renewed sense of energy as they continue in their commitment to prepare Canada’s leaders in evidence-informed health policy, management, and evaluation.

Alumni Connections

In keeping with the theme of this issue of SOG Connections, as we look to the Institute’s future I am certain that connections to our alumni will be one of its strongest assets. I am deeply proud of the fact that so many alumni choose to remain in touch with and take an active role in the life of our Institute. You contribute to IHPME’s vibrancy in many vital ways.

In fact, in this issue of our newsletter, you will see a call for preceptors for students enrolled in our Master of Health Informatics program. I hope some of you will consider taking on that important connection role too.
